Syrians Prefer to Leave Turkey Because of Xenophobia and Harassment

Because of the racism and hate speech fueled by opposition parties and politicians who want to plant the virus of racism in those around them, which results in new violence every day, many Syrians are trying to leave Turkey and go to Europe and other countries to avoid the harassment and attacks they face in Turkey.

Syrian refugee Abbas, who left from Turkey to France, says: I have not harassed anyone, I have not stolen anyone’s job and I have not raided anyone’s house. However, all these accusations were brought against me and I was harassed and beaten without any justification other than that I am a refugee.

Another Syrian refugee, Muhammad, says I left Turkey for Greece because of the harassment and racism I was subjected to, in addition to the difficulty of living in light of our inability to find a job in Turkey.

Another refugee named Ahmed says after he left Turkey and went to Holland, although I am Turkmen and I speak Turkish, I was harassed because I am Syrian. In the past two years, it has not been possible to find a job because employers have started saying that I do not deserve a job because I am Syrian. If I had stayed, I am sure one day I would be on the list to be deported to Syria.

As for refugee Adil, he says: “It is not realistic to live in Turkey anymore. When the economy gets worse, some people make us targets. We are the scapegoats for every evil in this country. Although I am a Turkmen from Syria, I was subjected to racist abuse.”We live in worse conditions than a Turkish citizen, but the way we are treated is getting harsher with each passing day. I don’t want to be imprisoned by the Syrian regime just because some Turkish politicians are fighting.
