Migrants in the Netherlands do not feel safe

A new study conducted by the Netherlands Institute for Social Research (SCP) among a group of first and second generation immigrants living in the Netherlands, reveals that many citizens and residents with immigrant backgrounds do not feel at home, and do not find the country particularly hospitable or welcome.

The institute conducted a survey of hundreds of immigrants from Turkish, Moroccan, Surinamese, Dutch, Somali, Iranian and Polish backgrounds, in addition to another group of 800 Dutch citizens who were not from immigrant backgrounds.

The study found that these groups of first- and second-generation immigrants – specifically refugees – do not feel that Dutch politics are taking good care of their interests. Some groups, especially the younger generations of Surinamese, Dutch-Caribbean or Moroccan descent, have little confidence in the Dutch government.
