They Stole them, Beat them, then Threw them into the Sea.. Some of Greece’s Violations against Asylum Seekers
A number of asylum seekers said that they were forced to carry out violent operations against other refugees, under coercion by the Greek border guards. This is what was revealed by a new investigation published by the British “Guardian” on Monday and drafted by a number of international media.
Six refugees, Syrians and Moroccans, reported that they had participated under duress in the Evros river push-backs, in exchange for a police warrant allowing them to stay for a month in Greece, describing themselves as “slaves” in the hands of the Athens authorities. In addition, they confirmed the theft and pickpocketing carried out by the Greek police against asylum seekers at its borders.
A Syrian refugee told the British journalist that the Greek police, after taunting him with his group when they were trying to enter Greece, pulled him to the detention center because he was fluent in English, and then offered him to work with them in repelling the refugees, otherwise they accused him of being a human smuggler. They told him that this work would not be paid for, and therefore it was “like forced labor,” according to the refugee.
While this is only an episode of a series of atrocities that the Greek border guards are masterful in carrying out against refugees and migrants. While international reports and press investigations uncover their horrors
