Working in the field of Syrian refugees, Prof. Dr. Bekir Berat Özipek stated that he sent his works to opposition parties, requested an appointment, but received no response.

Speaking at the conference titled “Syrian Refugees in Turkey: Facts and Misperceptions” organized by Harmoon Contemporary Research Center, Istanbul Medipol University Political Science and Public Administration Department Head Prof. Dr. Bekir Berat Özipek and academician Assoc. Dr. Faik Tanrıkulu discussed the judgments against Syrians.

HATE SPEECH IS COMING FROM THE OPPOSITION

Expressing that they are trying to reach opposition officials in Turkey who feed racist rhetoric, Özipek said:

“The source of hate speech against refugees comes from the opposition, especially the CHP. When our book about migration and Syrian refugees was published, we tried to get an appointment with the opposition parties. We wrote a letter to Iyi Party Chairman Meral Akşener. We said that we wanted to visit them with our Syrian friends and give them our book as a gift. They certainly did not return and did not accept us.”
Referring to the open-door policy implemented by Turkey, Özipek said, “Our country behaved like the spirit of a soulless world with its open-door policy. This was a very correct and humane step. However, when the government does not sufficiently inform the public on some issues, the challenge is left to the discriminators. Hate speech is pumped through social media. On the other hand, prejudice is widespread in our country, but it is not deep.”
